Question B
In the following problem, the synchronous counter is triggered on the positive rising edge of the clock, and has an active high reset signal and an active high enable signal
a) Design a 4-bit synchronous up-counter, using toggle flip-flops.
[10%]
B) Using the symbol for a 4-bit synchronous up-counter, sketch a circuit which will sequence repeatedly through the states 0 – 15, and which will output signals “A” and “B”:
A and B are normally low, A = 1 on state 7 and state 8, and B = 1 on state 14.
[10%]
c) Using the symbol for a 4-bit synchronous up-counter, sketch a circuit which will sequence repeatedly through the states 0 – 9.
[10%]
Question C
The design of a controller for a washing machine is required.
The machine has five phases: wash, rinse, 2nd rinse, 3rd rinse with conditioner and finally high-speed spin.
• The wash phase can be set to use water heated to 60°C or to 40°C, set by the user and heated internally. It lasts for 10 minutes.
• Each rinse phase lasts for 3 minutes.
• Each of the wash and rinse phases is followed by a drain and short low-speed spin.
• The short low-speed spin lasts for 1 minute.
• The high speed spin lasts for 5 minutes.
Produce a design specification for the controller, dealing with only the wash and first rinse phases in detail.
You may use a diagram to show the various phases of the process, but then provide also a clear description of the sequence of events and timings, with a list of the signals (sensibly named) required to control various parts of the hardware and to monitor the status of the hardware and the various stages of the process.
