For this assignment, you will study and extend the source code of a simple instant
messaging client. The instant messenger is written in Java. It is designed to support
several user interfaces, such as Swing and AWT, and several network protocols, such as
Jabber and ICQ. Below is a screenshot:
The code you will receive includes support for a Swing user interface, the Jabber
protocol, and a local loopback protocol.
Download & installation
The instant messenger source code is available on the course website and is packaged as
a zip file containing two Eclipse projects (“instantmessenger.zip”). You will need
Eclipse 3.3 or newer for this assignment. To import the instant messenger into Eclipse,
do the following:
Select “File” > “Import”
Select “General” > “Existing Projects into Workspace”
Click “Select archive file:” and then “Browse...”
Navigate to the “instantmessenger.zip” file, select it and click “OK”. Two
projects should be recognised by Eclipse.
Click “Finish”
You should now have two new projects in your Eclipse workspace. These projects are
named “instantmessenger” and “microjabberwookie”. Only the Java code in the
“instantmessenger” project is relevant for this assignment; you may consider
“microjabberwookie” a 3rd party component.
NOTE: This assignment contains two (2) normal exercises and one (1) extra exercise
for 2nd session (2de zittijd).
The code you will receive includes support for a Swing user interface, the Jabber
protocol, and a local loopback protocol.

Find the following design patterns in the source code of the “instantmessenger” project
:
1. Observer
2. Abstract Factory
3. State
4. Adapter
Note that each design pattern may have been applied more than once! You only need to
find one application of each design pattern! Describe the following for each design
pattern:
Participants. Only describe one “Client” participant for the Adapter pattern!
Motivation and applicability of the pattern in its concrete situation in 20-50
words. Do not give a general description of the design pattern.
Class diagram of the involved participants. Only include elements necessary for
the design pattern.
Sequence or collaboration diagram of pattern-specific collaborations.
