As you may know, Drop down List has two properties: Value and Text.You can have the value which you want to use in your query in the value while you display something that can be understood by the user.Let's say you have a table 'Products' and in that talble you have a field called 'Category' .This field is of type int so it accepts numbers

1 for computers
2 for Software
3 for Laptops

You can then create ad rop down list like:

Computers
Software

When the user selects one of these options and submit the form you will be able to get the value and use in your query:

"select*from Products where Category=" Cint(Request("Category"))

Request("Category") : this gets the value from the form
Cint: this is used to convert the value from  a string to integer
