About

This project was created by Intel to enable support for the Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection and Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection mini PCI adapters. This project (IPW2200) is intended to be a community effort as much as is possible given some working constraints (mainly, no HW documentation is available)

If you are an end user looking for a driver to use, please use stable versions (versions ending in a 0). You can always find the latest tested stable release from Intel's Laptop Products page.

If you are looking to help develop or test, please see this notice before using one of the unstable / untested snapshots.

As always, in both cases (users or developers/testers) please send feedback, bug reports, feature requests and any fixes you come up with. Please let us know which distrubition you use this with, and any problems you encounter.

You can submit bugs to the Bugzilla repository available at BugHost.

Other Intel wireless project pages:

Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 Network Connection

Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection

Requirements

In order to use the IPW2200 driver you will need the following:

1. Linux (of course) with a 2.6.8+ kernel [link]. See README.ipw2200 for information on specific options required to be enabled in the kernel.

2. Wireless Extensions (v17) and Tools (v28) [link]

3. The IPW2200 driver. You can obtain the latest development snapshot below.

4. The IPW2200 binary firmware image. The firmware can be obtained here.

For instructions on how to build and use the driver, please see the INSTALL document.

    14ent3connect.gif
  5. Click Apply.
Result: Your configuration has been saved. You are returned to the Network Device Listing window where your new device is listed in addition to the old one.
  6. To use your wireless device:
•Select the wireless device from the list.
    •Click the Activate button.
Result: Your wireless device is now the active network device on your workstation.
  7. Select File > Close. Save your settings when prompted by clicking Yes.
Result: Your settings have been saved, your wireless card is active, and the configuration tool has exited cleanly.

Connect Via Wireless

Once you have configured your computer for Ethernet connectivity and configured your wireless card, you must register for DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to take advantage of MITnet's mobile connections on campus.

Faculty and staff must have a valid static MITnet IP address, which you have if you completed the Ethernet connectivity setup. See DHCP Service at MIT for more information and to sign up.

Setting up Tether

Unfortunately, RedHat does not officially support any modems for RHEL, so there are no "certified" modem models. However, most external modems (e.g., those that connect to the serial ports on the back of your PC) should work. Some internal modems may work, however the majority of internal modems are controllerless modems or "Winmodem" (for more information, see <a href="http://kb.indiana.edu/data/aepb.html">Indiana University's Knowledgebase), which are not true modems. These modems are sound cards which emulate modem signals in software, and the majority of them cannot be used with Linux. There is some support for certain chipsets, but due to the wide variety of controllerless modems, IS&T cannot offer any information or assistance for them. For more information, please see Linmodems.org Support. Additionally, some laptop manufacturers cut corners and use winmodems instead of true modems. This does not mean that your laptop modem will not work, but you should be aware that you may encounter difficulties. USB and bluetooth modems are not addressed in this document.

The following instructions were tested with a Zoom Technologies 56Kx Model 2648 external modem.

Installing the modem: (you may skip this step if your modem has been installed and detected by RHEL)

  1. Connect the modem to a free serial port on your machine.
  2. Turn the modem's power on and verify that it is receiving power.
  3. Boot linux.
Result: You should see the Kudzu hardware detection program screen:

  1. kudzu1.jpg
Note: If the kudzu program does not start, that means your modem cannot be detected. You can try configuring the modem manually, but it may not be possible to use that modem.
  2. Press the space bar to continue.
Result: The kudzu program should detect your modem (the information shown here will vary depending on your hardware):
    15conn.gif
  3. Choose Configure
    Result: The modem is configured.

Note: If you boot Linux and your external modem is turned off, you may be told that you have removed the hardware from your system and kudzu will give you the option to remove the configuration. Do NOT remove the configuration, instead choose the Do Nothing button, and kudzu will no longer check for the modem at boot time.

Connect to Tether:

  1. From the Red Hat menu in your toolbar, choose System Settings > Network. If prompted for the root password, enter it.
Result: You should see the Network configuration menu similar to this:
    16conn.gif
  2. Choose the "Hardware" tab.
Result: The Hardware tab configurations appear.
    17conn.gif
  3. If you already see a modem device listed, skip to step 4. Otherwise, click the New button.
Result: You will be asked to select the hardware type.
    18conn.gif
  4. Choose Modem from the dropdown list. Click OK.
Result: You will see the modem configuration screen.
    19conn.gif
  5. Make the following settings:
    • Modem device: Leave default if kudzu was able to detect your modem. If not, set it to either "/dev/ttyS0" or "/dev/ttyS1" (COM1 and COM2, respectively).
    • Set baud rate to "115200", which is the maximum speed most serial ports can support.
    • Set Flow Control to "Hardware" unless your modem specifically requires another type. Consult your modem documentation.
    • Set the Modem Volume to Medium so that you can hear the dialing take place most modems will detect the lack of a dialtone, or a busy signal, but you may want to hear messages such as "The number is temporarily not available" if your phone provider is experiencing problems.

Click OK to save the configuration.

Result: Your configuration is saved. You will be returned to the main window, and you should see the modem in the list of hardware devices:

20conn.gif

[*]Click on the Devices tab, and choose New.

Result: The "Add New Device Type" Window appears:

21conn.gif

[*] Select Modem connection and click Forward.

Result: The Select provider screen appears with a list of Providers for Austria, Czech Rebpulic, Germany, Solvenia, and the UK.

22conn.gif

[*] As MIT is not listed, you will need to enter the information by hand:

  • Prefix: Leave blank. However, if you have call waiting, you should disable it by entering the "star code" (an asterisk followed by two digits) in the Prefix box. Consult your phone company to obtain this information.
  • Area Code : 617
  • Phone Number: 679-4000
  • Provider name: Tether
  • Login name: Your Kerberos username
  • Password: Your Kerberos password
Note: Your password will be saved on the local machine. If anyone besides you has root access to the machine, they will be able to obtain your password.

Click Forward to save this information.

Result: Your information is saved. You should now be asked about the network configuration for this connection.

23conn.gif

[*]Accept the defaults as shown and click Forward.

Result: You see a summary window:

السلام عليكم

bme_rav4 الأمر يتطلب بناء جديدة للينوكس (build a new kernel) مع سائق (driver) خاص ببطاقة

intel ® , PRO/Wireless 2200BG
