Birds of a Feather BoF03 Object-Relational Persistence for .NET The advent of object-orientation in .NET brings a relatively new set of concerns for the Microsoft developer. The impedance mismatch between the object-oriented model of an application's memory space and the relational model of its durable storage has given rise to a set of approaches and tools to move an application's domain objects into and out of relational databases. Object-Relational Persistence Frameworks are a set of extensible tools that provide an application developer with a way to map business objects to relational data storage, and to access the data with a higher level, more business-like syntax rather than the arcane syntax of an API-based approach such as raw ADO .NET. The past couple of years of work with .NET have given rise to a number of persistence frameworks from a number of sources. There are commercial products, and open source projects alike. Birds of a Feather BoF04 Real World .NET and COM Interop Managed code is wonderful but many companies have millions of lines of existing COM Interop. The good news is that .NET has extensive Interop facilities. The bad news is that Interop, in real world applications can be very hard and fraught with gotchas, and issues. Birds of a Feather BoF05 Architecting Smart Client Applications (the future of application development) This BOF fosters discussion on what a smart client is and delves into the implications and opportunities for smart client application development now and into the future. The topics discussed focus on smart client technologies like InfoPath, VS .NET tools for Office 2003, Framework, and Managed Code Extensions for Office 2003, and Windows Forms, with industry experts who facilitate examples and solicit comments and discussion on the best techniques to getting started on smart client apps today. Birds of a Feather BoF10 Strategic Decisions and Rich Client War Stories: Designing today for "Whidbey" and "Longhorn" Web UI has always been a compromise: a means to an end. With .NET V1, Windows.Forms offers us a rich client model we can use to build high-quality, smart user interfaces, with (most of) the ease-of-deployment of a Web client. In this session we'd like to discuss the issues surrounding smart client UI, and highlight some of the opportunities coming along in "Whidbey" and "Longhorn". We'd like to share war stories, look at common design patterns (including the current UI Application Block), and learn how to prepare our code for the future. Birds of a Feather BoF11 General Security Design and Implementation Many people have to design secure systems in one way or another. In many cases a system is broken either through a flaw in the design, implementation, or user. Cryptography is available everywhere yet systems that use strong cryptography are regularly compromised. The goal of the BOF is to help developers get a better view of what security looks like. Topics could range from classical 'storing a secret', common myths and tips, copyright protection, application-level security, to social issues around security acceptance and whatever else the audience thinks is valuable or interesting. Attendees should share their experiences (good and bad), ask for suggestions, propose solutions and critique them. Host: Michael Giagnocavo. Birds of a Feather BoF12 Web Services Orchestration: More Than Just Getting the Weather and Checking Your Stocks At first there was a cool Web service, and then another one, and then another one, and then what? People started thinking about the bigger picture, not only the basics standards and specs that make Web services work. A picture of a world where service oriented enterprises execute business processes comprised of Web services. Because it is the processes which make up an enterprise's business! A key piece in this picture is the orchestration of Web services. An orchestration can compose new services from existing services or they can combine services to execute a business process. This sounds pretty good as long as it is easy to create an orchestration. The good news is: It is easy. You can build them using graphical drag-and-drop designers and then execute them through execution engines such as BizTalk Server 2004 or comparable implementations from ISVs such as OpenStorm or Collaxa. The enabling standard to allow cross-vendor process design and execution is the Business Process Execution Language (BPEL), jointly proposed to an OASIS TC by Microsoft and IBM and other partners. By doing so, Microsoft created a very flexible programming model that provides benefits such as increased performance and more control over database resources. However, without a rigid specification, it is possible with .NET to have wide variations in the implementations of data providers for different databases. This session will concentrate on understanding data access through ADO.NET. The session will include issues such as the benefits of managed vs. unmanaged code, connected vs. disconnected architecture, and how to maximize performance and interoperability across databases and providers.
