Database design includes SQL language support, object-oriented design, and the ability to modify database and table structures.

The Programmability rating takes into account support for stored procedures and triggers. We also evaluate the internal programming language. Security encompasses data protection and encryption of data tables, columns, and rows. It also refers to the security of data transfers between a client and a server, as well as auditing that identifies security violations. Interoperability includes support for seamless connectivity among heterogeneous systems and data sources. For data analysis, we evaluate OLAP features and other tools that reveal trends in the data stream. Performance means tested efficiency in processing database requests.
